  • 2005 - September: Both sides of the Grady family tree have roots in the Midwest - Kansas and Nebraska - Grady's and Minnich's came from there - we're mostly all wimpy city dwellers now, but our elders faced some daunting elements out on the plains!  My Grandmother, MaryB Grady, now in her 90's still has a few sections (that's farmer talk - a section is 1 square mile or 640 acres) where she grows wheat (and sometimes corn, milo and soy beans) out in Colby, Kansas - far western Kansas - where the amber waves of grain continue to yield our country's daily bread.  Here's an old Colby newspaper - the year 1929 in review - see April and June for some very old Grady family news!  Now, MaryB has lived through these US Presidents: Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert C. Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush.  She's sweet, loving and one hell of a tough cookie - windstorms, hail, droughts, floods, depressions, wars, locusts, failed crops and whatever nature could throw at her could NEVER keep her from smiling and enjoying herself.  Here's some pix from May 29th, 2004 - a windstorm blew into town  1 2 3  and... MaryB just keeps on chugging!  Next time you enjoy a nice slice of bread or a cookie or a croissant, keep in mind my sweet little old MaryB - she's a family treasure and she's been feeding America for almost a century!
